Unemployed Trained Teachers Demand Action: An Open Letter to Ghana’s Education Leadership

The Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers (CUTT) has issued a scathing open letter to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Honourable Minister of Education, expressing profound disillusionment with their leadership. The letter, dated May 3rd, 2024, highlights the dire neglect faced by trained and licensed teachers across the country.

In the wake of recent plans by the GES to recruit over 10,000 unqualified and untrained teachers through the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), while ignoring the plight of qualified educators, CUTT has raised alarm bells. The letter condemns the delay in recruiting trained teachers despite promises made by GES officials during a meeting with CUTT in March.

The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also faces criticism for prioritizing short-term political gains over addressing the critical shortage of teachers in schools. His focus on cosmetic projects and courting popularity among Senior High School (SHS) students has left trained teachers feeling neglected and abandoned.

CUTT warns both the GES and the Education Minister that their political ambitions will not override the demands of thousands of unemployed teachers. The letter serves as a stark reminder that neglecting the education system’s core needs will not go unnoticed or unchallenged.

The coalition emphasizes that their grievances are not politically motivated but stem from a genuine concern for the future of Ghana’s education system. They urge the authorities to prioritize the recruitment of trained teachers and address the pressing issues facing educators across the country.

In a bold declaration, CUTT vows to hold the government accountable and warns of consequences if their demands are not met swiftly. With thousands of trained teachers standing in solidarity, the coalition asserts its determination to ensure that their voices are heard and their rights respected.

The open letter concludes with a resounding message: the Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers will not rest until their demands are addressed with the urgency they deserve. For them, the time for action is now, and the government’s response will determine its legacy in the annals of Ghana’s educational history
