Ghana Dominates WAEC Excellence Awards: Sweeps Top Honors
Ghana has once again made a remarkable achievement by clinching all three top International Excellence Awards at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), recognizing exceptional performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
At this year’s Council Meeting held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Ghanaian students took center stage as they claimed all three prestigious awards, marking a momentous occasion in the country’s educational history.
The recipients of these distinguished awards, all hailing from Ghana, demonstrated outstanding academic prowess and dedication to excellence in their performance at the 2023 WASSCE. Among them, former students of St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS) stood out, securing two of the topmost honors.
Leading the pack was Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi Marton, an alum of St James Seminary SHS, who emerged as the overall winner with an impressive score of 623.5512. Following closely behind were Dzandu Selorm, formerly of Labone SHS, and Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, another St James Seminary SHS alumnus, claiming the second and third spots, respectively, with remarkable scores.
To qualify for these Excellent Awards, candidates must attain a grade A1 in at least eight subjects, including core subjects like English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, and Integrated Science.
Dr. Eric Nkansah, the director-general of the Ghana Education Service (GES), expressed heartfelt congratulations to the awardees, lauding their exceptional achievement on the international stage. He emphasized the pride felt by the GES and the entire nation in the consistent performance of Ghanaian students at the WASSCE.
Dr. Nkansah attributed the students’ success to the collective efforts of Ghanaian teachers and school administrators, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to nurturing academic excellence. He further highlighted the significance of this achievement as a testament to Ghana’s dedication to quality education and its positive impact on the nation’s youth.
