Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Submits Nomination Forms for NPP Flagbearer Race

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a significant step in his bid to become the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by submitting his nomination forms today, June 16. The ceremony, set to be held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, is expected to draw prominent figures within the party.

Dr. Bawumia, expressing his intentions on Facebook, declared his intention to contest the NPP’s Presidential Primary. He expressed optimism and stated, “It is possible.” Only a few weeks ago, the Vice President confidently asserted his belief in winning the flagbearer race scheduled for November 2023.

One of Dr. Bawumia’s key supporters, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, emphasized that it is the Vice President’s time to lead. According to Annoh-Dompreh, none of the other contestants can surpass Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities, calling for support in his favor. Citing the importance of timing in politics, he firmly believes that this is Dr. Bawumia’s moment to lead the NPP as the flagbearer and subsequently guide the nation as president.

In an interview with TV3’s Komla Kluste, Annoh-Dompreh disclosed that over 119 Members of Parliament from the Majority group back Dr. Bawumia as the flagbearer. He highlighted the changing dynamics of leadership and politics, drawing a parallel to the United States where President Biden overcame initial obstacles to become the president. Annoh-Dompreh firmly stated that Dr. Bawumia’s time has come, emphasizing that Alan Kyerematen, another prominent aspirant, cannot surpass him.

Alongside Dr. Bawumia, other aspirants in the NPP flagbearer race include former trades minister Alan Kyerematen, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey, and former general secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

As the NPP flagbearer race gains momentum, Dr. Bawumia’s submission of his nomination forms adds further excitement and anticipation to the party’s internal competition. The coming months will reveal the outcome of this tightly contested race as the NPP determines its candidate for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
