Rap Music In Ghana Is Dying; It Doesn’t Pay – YPee

Ghanaian rapper YPee has raised concerns over the dwindling popularity of rap music in the country, observing a significant shift as many hardcore rappers pivot towards singing.

In a recent statement, YPee highlighted the financial limitations within the rap scene, suggesting that the prospects for generating income are increasingly constrained, thus prompting artists to explore more commercially viable genres.

According to YPee, the transition from rap to singing is driven by the need for artists to produce commercially successful songs in order to sustain themselves financially. He emphasized the necessity for artists to create hits that resonate with audiences in order to generate revenue.

In a candid Facebook post, YPee lamented the challenges faced by hardcore rappers in Ghana, noting that while they may receive praise for their lyrical prowess, the lack of financial returns ultimately necessitates a shift towards more commercially appealing music.

Meanwhile, rapper and producer EL echoed YPee’s sentiments in a recent interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz Fm. EL acknowledged the growing trend of rappers transitioning to singing, citing the allure of better financial compensation in the singing genre compared to rap music.
