Over the years, several favourites for the AOTY of category have been disappointed after it went to other artistes, notable among them are the wins for Joe Mettle in 2017 and Diana Hamilton’s win in 2021 ahead of Kidi who was the crowd favourite.

Despite the anxiety and mixed emotions ahead of the awards ceremony, Black Sherif’s fans have expressed their unwavering support for him, regardless of the outcome

The VGMA awards ceremony, considered one of the most prestigious music events in the country, recognizes outstanding achievements in various categories.

The scheme’s definition of “The Artiste of the Year” is based on the artiste(s) with the most audience appeal and popularity during the year, as judged by the Academy, Board, and the General Public. To qualify for the award, the artiste(s) must have released a hit single/EP/album and secured one of the highest nominations for the year.

KPMG, an audit firm, oversees the public voting process, which accounts for 40% of the artist’s total score. Meanwhile, the VGMA Academy and Board each hold 30% influence in deciding the final winner.
