Why Ghanaian Artistes Resort To Drugs And Sex Addiction – Okyeame Kwame speaks

Renowned Ghanaian Hiplife artiste, Okyeame Kwame, has delved into the underlying causes of substance abuse and addiction within the creative industry, shedding light on the psychological dynamics at play.

In an enlightening interview with Accra-based Joy Prime, Okyeame Kwame offered a profound perspective on why many artists and creatives resort to drugs, alcohol, and sex as coping mechanisms for their internal struggles.

According to the seasoned artist, the root cause lies in the reluctance of creatives to confront their problems head-on, preferring to numb their minds with distractions rather than engage in critical self-reflection.

“When you close your eyes and sit down for 10 seconds, immediately, all the problems you have in life will come into your brain. Because your brain is so smart that it’s always trying to solve your problems,” Okyeame Kwame explained.

He emphasized that the constant barrage of thoughts can be overwhelming, prompting individuals to seek refuge in various vices to silence their inner turmoil temporarily.

Sharing his personal journey, Okyeame Kwame disclosed his battle with depression and how he chose to confront it through a year-long period of meditation and introspection.

During this hiatus from music and public life, he immersed himself in solitude, allowing his thoughts to surface without distraction. This period of reflection ultimately culminated in the creation of his acclaimed “Made in Ghana” album.

Reflecting on his experience, Okyeame Kwame urged fellow artists to embrace moments of quiet introspection as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Rather than shying away from their problems, he advocated for facing them head-on, allowing for genuine healing and creative inspiration to emerge.
