GPRTU to Convene Meeting Amid Transport Fares Hike Concerns

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is poised to convene a crucial meeting on Wednesday, April 10, to address the pressing issue of potential increases in transport fares across the nation.

Amidst escalating concerns over rising operational costs, the Western regional branch of the union has preemptively announced a 30-percent surge in transport fares for its members, slated to take effect from Monday, April 8.

The decision to explore fare adjustments stems from mounting grievances voiced by the drivers’ union regarding the escalating expenses associated with fuel, spare parts, and DVLA documentation fees. These factors, they contend, are significantly eroding their profit margins and viability in the industry.

In an interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight, Mr. David Agboado, president of the Concerned Drivers Association, expressed the union’s resolve not to await directives from the transport ministry, citing perceived inaction on the ministry’s part.

“Because of the reintroduction of the price stabilization and recovery levy, that makes fuel prices surge twice. Now, with oil marketing companies threatening further increases, we too won’t remain idle,” asserted Mr. Agboado.

Highlighting the financial strain endured by drivers in recent months, Mr. Agboado emphasized the urgent need for fare adjustments, suggesting a potential increment ranging between 20 to 30 percent, particularly to offset the impact of fuel price hikes.

“Spare parts costs are skyrocketing, and every aspect of our business is affected. The time has come for us to adjust fares accordingly,” he stressed.

Acknowledging persistent appeals from drivers for fare adjustments over the past three months, Mr. Agboado underscored the imperative for immediate action, given what he perceives as a lack of proactive engagement from the transport ministry.
