GTEC Orders Suspension of July 2024 Salaries for College of Education Teaching Staff

In a recent directive issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the salaries of all teaching staff members of the Colleges of Education (CETAG) for July 2024 have been halted. This decision follows the Minister of Education’s stance on the continued illegal strike by CETAG members since June 2024.
According to the letter dated July 22, 2024, and addressed to the Director of Payroll at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, the stoppage applies to all CETAG teaching staff except for the College Principals. The letter explicitly instructs College Principals not to validate the July 2024 salaries of the teaching staff.
The communication, signed by Nicholas Ameyaw, Head of IPPD, on behalf of Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulat, was also copied to the Minister of Education and all College Principals, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are informed.
BACKGROUND
On June 14, CETAG members initiated the strike, calling for improved working conditions and better remuneration packages. The action was prompted by the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and previously negotiated service conditions.
CETAG’s demands include the payment of one month’s salary to each member for additional duties performed in 2022 and the application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities for deserving CETAG members. The leadership believes that these measures are essential for recognizing the additional responsibilities and ensuring fair compensation.
The prolonged strike has left students in a state of uncertainty, as the interruption in the academic calendar continues to affect their education. The strike aims to exert pressure on the government to fulfill its commitments and address the concerns of CETAG members.
